The Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), established in 1983, is one of the largest research centers in Greece with well-organized facilities and highly-qualified personnel. It functions under the supervision of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT), and consists of seven Research Institutes located throughout Greece: Heraklion, Rethymnon, Patras and Ioannina. The Foundation’s headquarters are located in Heraklion, Crete. The research and technological directions of FORTH cover major areas of scientific, social, and economic interest, such as: Computer Sciences, Molecular Biology, Lasers, Telecommunications, Medical Engineering, Microelectronics, Robotics, Biotechnology, Materials, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Biomedical Technologies and Bioinformatics. The FORTH Biomedical Research Institute (BRI), located in Ioannina, Epirus, is one of the seven Research Institutes of FORTH. It was founded in 1998 and merged with FORTH three years later. FORTH BRI has three research directions: 1) Molecular Medicine with emphasis on regenerative medicine, 2) Biomedical Technology, and 3) Molecular Epidemiology. In addition, it aims to promote research on the analysis and application of health systems.

FORTH has participated either as a coordinator or as a major partner in projects like USBone, h-Life, DROMEAS, PLACEBO, ACTIVE HEALTH, and CITATION. These projects were focusing on early diagnosis, predication models, development of intelligent medical systems, telemedicine and in-hospital/out-hospital medical applications. At the moment, FORTH is also participating in the ARTreat project and in the CHRONIOUS project.
